Just prior to its February 15th release, Larry has generously posted the album online. We’re talking FULL tracks, ladies and gentlemen.

Old schoolers like ourselves really appreciate Larry’s treatment of the timeless sound of Gamble and Huff. Despite the fact he’s assembled a superb band and vocals for this recording, it’s all about the guitar. Don’t miss this!

Be sure to root for Larry at this year’s Grammy Awards. He’s nominated in the Best Pop Instrumental Album category with Take Your Pick, recorded with Asia’s premier guitarist Tak Matsumoto.

Larry’s upcoming album – a tribute to Gamble and Huff’s “The Sound of Philadelphia” – is undergoing finishing touches in order to hit the shelves in October.

The Kingston Trio has always been cool. For instance, those guys have the most optimistic album title in recording history: “The Kingston Trio – The First 50 Years.” They’ve got their own iPhone app and a Fantasy Camp. They recently dusted off an antique reel-to-reel rehearsal tape “Above the Purple Onion”, gave it a remastering hosedown and plan to send it off in about three weeks. Look for it and more music at the Kingston Trio Store. . . . . . . More Larry luv. Mr. 335 is currently bouncing all over the globe playing a gazillion weeks’ worth of shows at various festivals and venues. The man is an airline frequent-flyer mileage program monster. Thought we saw a stop at the North Pole in his “Round the World in 80 Days Tour” on larrycarlton.com but we could be mistaken . . . . . . our “See Earl Klugh Before We’re Six Feet Under” campaign has gotten slightly bogged down, either due to the heat or more likely the fact that Earl’s got enough to do at his day job rather than take our cue and find his way with the help of Google Maps to a venue around our corner. We won’t give up hope he’ll show up here sometime soon, perhaps after taking care of some irrelevant business like playing the Blue Note in New York for a week starting July 27. That’s why we visit his site for the latest tour dates and the most relaxing splash page sound on the net. . . . . . . Don Tracker: Don rolls into Minnesota to play the Moondance Jam tomorrow evening. If you happen to be attending, we’d appreciate a review, maybe some photos and perhaps the set list. Also, if you’re there for Saturday’s lineup, we’re curious to know if any original members are still in Lynyrd Skynyrd. Enjoy!

Regular site visitors know Larry Carlton is a card-carrying member in our circle of top second favorite guitarists.

Why is that? 1) go back and listen carefully to your Steely Dan “Royal Scam” album, 2) make every effort to get to a live Larry show and see for yourself how much fun a guy playing guitar can have, and 3) grab his newest album, Take Your Pick, a collaboration with Japan’s premier guitar player Tak Matsumoto. That should answer the question as to why we’re hooked on Mr. 335.

Seats are filling for Don’s show coming up on August 19th at the Pavilion in Sun Valley. Once again, another Don Felder live show is for a very worthwhile cause, benefitting the Danny Thompson Memorial Leukemia Fund. There are also a limited number of tickets on sale for the VIP cocktail party prior to the concert. Tickets are available directly from Sun Valley Resort Online Sales. . . . . . On August 7 in Tempe, Arizona, the Fender Hall of Fame will induct the late James Jamerson, legendary bassist with Motown’s original session band The Funk Brothers. Jamerson is widely considered to have been singly responsible for putting funk on the map with his melodic bass lines and was so prolific that his Hitsville session credits are basically the label’s discography. Those unfamiliar with his playing stop reading and watch him along side fellow Motown great Marvin Gaye performing live in this video – hang on for the entire nine minutes because in the last two you hear him really get rolling. (Semi-off-topic digression: our #1 Funk Brothers orchestration has Jamerson playing on this original (instrumental) version of Can’t Get Next to You, which also has that cool psychedelic-soul-wah played by Dennis Coffey, charter member of felderfans.com’s Unsung Guitar Heroes Riff of Fame.) More about the FHOF induction at Fender.com . . . . . Ever wanted to <del datetime="2009-08-01T22:46:07+00:00">blow money on</del> invest in vintage guitars the easy way? Check out the 1959/1960 Gibson ES335 and the 1972 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop Deluxe (once owned by John Lee Hooker) which will set you back a minimum of $16,000. You can even whip out the checkbook guilt-free: both models are currently on the auction block to benefit the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation . . . . . And last but not least our webmaster’s fave Larry “Kid Charlemagne” Carlton performed with Steely Dan at the Beacon Theater in N.Y. this weekend. Next up is a week of solo early and late evening shows at the Blue Note along with son Travis Carlton (Aug 4-9). Tickets start at an amazing $20, meaning you can afford to go to all of the shows.
