Charity Tournament Aids Cancer Center

Click on Don to view more golf photosGolf enthusiasts and generous guests helped raise close to £30,000 for the Christie Hospital in Manchester this past weekend at the annual Howard Keel-Don Felder Golf Classic.

The following team sponsors made this year’s event a success: AWM Promotions/Willie Morgan, Barnsley Football Club, Bridgemere, Carden Park Hotel, Character Options, CK Beckett, Dunham Investments, Enterprise plc, Fantastic Places, Future Environmental, Hain-Celestial, Hill Dickinson, Jim Martin, Perrys, Ravenstone, Regency Country Club, Vacation Travel, Vale Abbey Golf Club and WE 7.

Don has been participating in the event for the past ten years. He was asked by the late Howard Keel to take over hosting duties in 2004. Next year will be the 25th edition.

We’ve put together a slideshow from the golf and gala.

Thanks to Joe B. for contributing several images.

It’s the Classic Golf Weekend

hk_golfballDon’s in the U.K. this weekend, hosting the traditional Keel-Felder Golf Classic. As in the previous two years, the DeVere Carden Park Hotel and Golf Resort near Chester will stage the charity event on Sunday, September 6. The first foursomes hit the fairways early and don’t stop swinging until shortly before the cocktails, gala dinner, auction and entertainment top off the day’s festivities.

April News & Updates

Earlier this month, the Montreux Jazz Festival (July 13-18) announced its 2009 program. “Jazz Festival” is somewhat of a misnomer. This year’s “jazz” includes the likes of the Black Eyed Peas, Alice Cooper and Sammy Hagar (!), Donna Summer, Derek Trucks, Lily Allen, Jeff Beck, Seal, Steely Dan, Steve Winwood and B.B. King. (Rest assured, the jazz lineup is phenomenal – the list is l-o-o-o-n-g.) Interesting addition this year: Creed Taylor and the CTI All Star Band – Creed Taylor was Don’s first record producer back in 1969* . . . . . . Our “house” steel guitarist, Al Perkins, has announced he will be returning to Europe this summer with selected dates in the U.K. and eventually on the continent. Al will also be appearing this weekend at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio, CA (4/26), where Poco (Messina, Furay, Young, Cotton, Schmit) and Pure Prairie League are also on the bill. . . . . . . What are you waiting for? European Crosby, Stills and Nash fans take heed: four of their nine European shows are already sold out: Glastonbury Festival (Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen) on 6/27, London (Royal Albert Hall) on 7/1, Paris on 7/4 and Amsterdam on 7/6. We’re looking forward to the open air show in Bonn on July 3rd. Fans in the U.S. have a selection of domestic dates from early June on. (You know, if Al Perkins and Stephen Stills stumble upon each other in Europe, you’ve got a third of a Manassas reunion!)

Thanks, Everyone!…

…for another memorable Keel-Felder Golf weekend. A total of £33,060 was raised to benefit the Christies cancer center. In addition to the day’s round of (scuba-)golf, the evening included some great entertainment. We particularly enjoyed Don accompanying Tim Healy’s vocal on “Desperado.”

Once again, Don was gracious enough to allow himself to be filmed for golf-educational purposes. Joe B’s annual video has been edited into bite-sized pieces and posted over on the 2008 Classic page. We’ve also added a few images from the gala dinner.
