Top 100 Musicians in Golf

Just in time for the start of the Dunhill Links, Golf Digest has published online its November 2008 issue’s ranking of the Top 100 musicians who play golf.

This year, Don moved up a couple of notches and is tied at #34 with six others (enough to form a band.) Fellow rankees Huey Lewis (#12) and Tico Torres (#24) are also set to play at Dunhill this year.

Scotch on the Rockers

We thought about just going ahead with a cut and paste of our blog entry from last year’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, ’cause it looks like basically the same club-toting celebrities and sports stars are back in Scotland again this year. The event is too much of a good thing to miss out on and once you’re in, you ain’t budging. Don returns with fellow rock ‘n rollers Huey Lewis and Tico Torres along with vocalist Ronan Keating, with whom he played alongside of two years ago.

The tournament starts next week on Thursday, October 2 and runs through Sunday, October 5. Incidentally, there’ll be a few professional golfers hanging around St. Andrews then, too. They’ll be competing for a measly $5,000,000 total purse in the pro-am, rotating around three different courses over the first three days, with those making the cut playing to win on Sunday. With that kind of loose change available the organizers don’t even bother charging admission for the first three days.

A fans-eye-view of the goings-on can be seen in our own slideshow from last year’s competition. We’ll share information from this year’s event as it unfolds.

The tournament is televised in Europe and in the U.S. More information at the Dunhill Championship official site, including a summary of the celebrity amateurs. The pro entry list can be found at the European Tour site.

Thanks, Everyone!…

…for another memorable Keel-Felder Golf weekend. A total of £33,060 was raised to benefit the Christies cancer center. In addition to the day’s round of (scuba-)golf, the evening included some great entertainment. We particularly enjoyed Don accompanying Tim Healy’s vocal on “Desperado.”

Once again, Don was gracious enough to allow himself to be filmed for golf-educational purposes. Joe B’s annual video has been edited into bite-sized pieces and posted over on the 2008 Classic page. We’ve also added a few images from the gala dinner.

Keel-Felder Classic Fore Christies

Once again, Carden Park will be the setting for this year’s annual Howard Keel-Don Felder Golf Classic coming up on Sunday, September 7th. The event’s golf tournament pairs up sponsored amateur players and celebrities from sport and entertainment for a day on the course, with the focus on fun and the proceeds benefitting the Christies Hospital cancer center in Manchester. In addition to the golf, a traditional benefit auction and gala dinner-cabaret top off the day’s activities.

Spectators are welcome to come out and enjoy the golf, chat with the participants and perhaps get an autograph or two from a favorite football player or television personality. Greg Morton is looking forward to returning with his band to support Don musically and if last year’s show was any indication, there should be some great post-game entertainment in store for the sponsors and their guests.

Check the Classics page over the next few days for visitor information and once things get underway, live quotes and visuals direct from the venue!
